6 Motivation and Encouragement Doses to Postgraduate Students

The hard truth about postgraduate degree programs is that it is tough. A PhD scholar at South Africa Eunice Akuru has penned this poetic piece. It serves to motivate and encourage all postgraduate students.

Postgraduate Students and Research Supervisor

If I had the opportunity, I would let administrators of higher institutions know that not everyone should be a postgraduate supervisor. It takes one who is passionate and one who understands the place of time and wellness in the lives of postgraduates to do the good job of postgraduate supervision.

If I had the opportunity, I would let postgraduate supervisors know the need to be humane in the way they treat and relate with their postgraduate students. Whatever you do as a supervisor, always put yourself in the position of the student. If the tables were turned, how would you feel if you were at the receiving end of the treatment you are dishing out?

Postgraduate Students and Personal Life

If I had the opportunity, I would let postgraduate students know that there is a life after postgraduate studies. No matter how hard the program is and how long you have to wait to get there, always prioritize your life and your health. Yes, you need the degree, but more importantly, you need to stay alive and healthy to enjoy the dividends of the hard work.

If I had the opportunity, I would let Husbands/Wives who are postgraduate students know the need to prioritize the relationship with their spouses during the course of their program. No matter the pressure, never neglect or ignore the feelings and complaints of your spouse and always take the time off to give him/her the needed attention. Some relationships have crashed due to failure to cope with and handle the pressures that comes with postgraduate studies.

If I had the opportunity, I would let every woman who is a postgraduate student know that she’s doing an amazing job by taking the bold step of registering for a postgraduate program whilst taking care of her family. Whatever happens, always be proud of yourself and know that victory is assured as you keep doing the best you can.

Don’t give up!

If I had the opportunity, I would let that postgraduate student who is about to throw in the towel, or the one who is experiencing self-doubt, or worse still, who is contemplating suicide, that your life is worth more than anything and everything you could ever aspire to achieve. Please, stay alive, and remember first of all that you are not alone, and second of all, that nothing lasts forever. This too shall pass, so be hopeful!
