Sure Tips in Preparation for GRE
- Familiarize yourself with GRE pattern of test administration, content, duration of each session and so on. See previous blog post on general info about GRE
-
Purchase GRE practice books, CDs and softwares. There are many GRE practice books, in hard cover and electronic formats that are invaluable to a successful GRE. It is important NEVER to rely on one book, as each book has its own short comings. Examples of GRE practice books are, Grubber 2015, Barron’s GRE, Nova GRE Math Bible, Kaplan, Princeton Review and many others.
-
Practice Hard: After purchasing at least 5 different GRE books, the real preparation just begun. Review the quantitative, verbal reasoning and analytical writing section of each book. The tougher a particular practice book seems to appear, the better for you.
-
Take time to prepare: To ace your GRE, you need to take time off, and sink your head in serious preparations. To be sure, have at least 2 months of GRE practice and tutorials, with about 4 hours daily. Well, this is just recommendation, and not a rule.

FG stops Postgraduate Training in Low-ranking Varsities Abroad
The Federal Government on Friday announced that it had stopped postgraduate training programmes for Nigerian lecturers and scholarship awards to students to study in “mushroom” and low-ranking universities abroad.
The decision takes effect from this year, 2017.
The government also condemned a situation in the past where lecturers were sent by their institutions to study in “mushroom and bottom-of-the-league universities abroad”, under the Academic Staff Training and Development intervention of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund programme.
The Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Dr Abdullahi Baffa, said this in Abuja when he received the leadership of Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria led by its chairman, Chuks Ukwuatu.
He said, “From 2017, we have stopped all that, public funds would only be spent to train scholars in top-of-the-league universities across the world.
“We are sending scholars to pursue higher degrees abroad but we are not putting the interest of the country in trying to know what these scholars are studying and where they are going.
“Our scholars who are supposed to be teaching and conducting research in tertiary instructions, who are supposed to be training and supporting the provision of high level manpower that would drive the nation’s economy should be trained in the best universities in the world.”
According to him, TETFUND has also stopped the beneficiary institutions from sending their scholars to attend mushroom conferences, warning that public funds would only be spent to support scholars in attending real academic conferences.
2016/17 CHEVENING SCHOLARS AWARDS CELEBRATION
It was an evening of excitement and celebration as successful as 2016/17 Chevening awardees from Nigeria mingle with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, and past Chevening Scholars from Nigeria.
“I think it’s a global opportunity to meet with other scholars and to be a part of the alumni, and above all to be able to get the investment where you can come back and develop Nigeria as a whole, so, it’s been a fantastic opportunity, and I am happy to be privileged to be a part of the global network,” she said excitedly.
This year, Nigeria had the most applications for Chevening scholarship, about 4000. The High Commissioner also stressed on the importance of funding the programme so that more Nigerians could be beneficiaries as he called on the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to encourage their best to apply for a Chevening scholarship, as the scholarship needs more people in the civil service and government sectors.
Big names such as Channels television’s John Momoh, Nigeria’s Comptroller general of Immigration and many more have benefitted from the awards, including the Ministry of Foreign affairs Permanent Secretary, Audu-Rafiu Olusola Enikanolaiye. Supporting the network would in turn not just aid social networking, but provide opportunities for future generations of Nigerians.
