WHAT IS GRE?

GRE is an acronym for Graduate Record Examination. It is a well standardized academic test, used as an admission criteria for postgraduate schools. GRE is a requirement for (post) graduate entry, at Masters or Doctoral (Ph.D) study in the U.S, Canada, Europe and is increasingly being adopted in Asia-pacific and Africa, hopefully, in Nigeria soon.

GRE have been rated as one of the most difficult exams in the world, because of the high analytical and critical reasoning skills required by GRE candidate. Graduate record examination questions are not specific to any particular field of study.
GRE exams has three sections on which knowledge and skills tested viz,
1. Analytical writing
2. Quantitative reasoning
3. Verbal reasoning
GRE Analytical writing involves testing candidate ability of original thought. It is an essay writing with 2 sub-sections.
First is the issue based task, where the candidate is given 30 minutes to write confidently on a selected topic. The chosen topic can vary from biotechnology to emerging economy and so on. A guide of possible topics is given ahead.
The second aspect of GRE analytical writing is the argumentative based task. GRE candidates would be given a series of facts on an issue and be asked to critique in an argumentative style. Candidate can take a stand to support or oppose, but the important skills is the logic on display and orderly presentation of points convincingly. It also takes 30 minutes.
GRE analytical writing is graded from zero to six (0-6) with a score gap of 0.5.
Quantitative reasoning, tests the GRE candidate’s skill on numerical computation and manipulation for problem solving. This section has 20 questions, expected to be completed in 35 minutes. The grade range is from 130 – 170.
The verbal reasoning test the candidate’s comprehension, critical analysis and use of vocabulary. 20 questions are to be completed in 30 minutes. The grade range is also from 130 – 170.
There is usually an experimental section that doesn’t add to the total score. This may not be easily identifiable by candidates. GRE uses this for its own research.
Overall, to get admitted to a top/ivy league school, GRE candidates should target a total score of about 320.  It’s advantages include;
1. Ease of being admitted fir postgraduate study
2. Earn scare scholarship based on GRE performance.
3. Graduate assistantship job.

FG stops Postgraduate Training in Low-ranking Varsities Abroad

The Federal Government on Friday announced that it had stopped postgraduate training programmes for Nigerian lecturers and scholarship awards to students to study in “mushroom” and low-ranking universities abroad.

The decision takes effect from this year, 2017.

The government also condemned a situation in the past where lecturers were sent by their institutions to study in “mushroom and bottom-of-the-league universities abroad”, under the Academic Staff Training and Development intervention of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund programme.

The Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Dr Abdullahi Baffa, said this in Abuja when he received the leadership of Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria led by its chairman, Chuks Ukwuatu.

He said, “From 2017, we have stopped all that, public funds would only be spent to train scholars in top-of-the-league universities across the world.

“We are sending scholars to pursue higher degrees abroad but we are not putting the interest of the country in trying to know what these scholars are studying and where they are going.

“Our scholars who are supposed to be teaching and conducting research in tertiary instructions, who are supposed to be training and supporting the provision of high level manpower that would drive the nation’s economy should be trained in the best universities in the world.”

According to him, TETFUND has also stopped the beneficiary institutions from sending their scholars to attend mushroom conferences, warning that public funds would only be spent to support scholars in attending real academic conferences.

2016/17 CHEVENING SCHOLARS AWARDS CELEBRATION

Chevening scholars award

It was an evening of excitement and celebration as successful as 2016/17 Chevening awardees from Nigeria mingle with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, and past Chevening Scholars from Nigeria.

The Chevening Scholarships are the UK Government’s overseas scholarships, awarded to individuals with demonstrable leadership potential who also have good academic backgrounds. The scholarship not only offers financial support for people studying for a master’s degree at any UK university, it also allows beneficiaries become part of an influential global network of 46,000 alumni. In 2015, 45 Nigerian benefited from the fully funded scholarship.
Leadership Newspaper reports that people who had made it to become Chevening Scholars were being ushered in, some with their guests into the residence of the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency Paul Arkwright.
Omoboyowa Roberts, one of the beneficiaries of the 2016/17 Chevening  Scholarship, told LEADERSHIP that, “this for me is a dream come true, something I had always looked forward to even from my university days. I am going to be studying, Masters in Peace and Development at Leeds Beckett University.

“I think it’s a global opportunity to meet with other scholars and to be a part of the alumni, and above all to be able to get the investment where you can come back and develop Nigeria as a whole, so, it’s been a fantastic opportunity, and I am happy to be privileged to be a part of the global network,” she said excitedly.

This year, Nigeria had the most applications for Chevening scholarship, about 4000. The High Commissioner also stressed on the importance of funding the programme so that more Nigerians could be beneficiaries as he called on the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to encourage their best to apply for a Chevening scholarship, as the scholarship needs more people in the civil service and government sectors.

Big names such as Channels television’s John Momoh, Nigeria’s Comptroller general of Immigration and many more have benefitted from the awards, including the Ministry of Foreign affairs Permanent Secretary, Audu-Rafiu Olusola Enikanolaiye. Supporting the network would in turn not just aid social networking, but provide opportunities for future generations of Nigerians.

A Chevening Scholar, with an offer at London School of Hygiene and Tropical medicine to study Health Policy Planning and Financing, Chinwe Chikwendu, said “Perhaps why I am actually most excited is because it’s not just me, from my family here tonight, my younger brother happens to also be a beneficiary. We are going to the same university; we are going to do the same course, so I bet you this goes to show the level of transparency that is actually applied in the Chevening scholarship selection, because if there was any other thing that is considered then both of us would not be here tonight. I want to say, a big thank you to UK government first of all for the Chevening scholarship scheme, because this is just something very wonderful that has really helped so many people achieve their dreams, it is also something that has given many people the opportunity they had never really imagined they would get. So it’s something really wonderful, and I think the best way to reward the British government and Chevening, is for us to go out there to the UK and make the most of the opportunity.
