The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), also called Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), is a necessary certificate earned in order to become a professional teacher.
In the U.K, it is often called the PGCE. This is a teacher training course to back the needed qualified teachers status (QTS). Not all Univerities offering PGCE grant a QTS.
As an professional educationist, understand the need to be a trained teacher and not just having the talents for teaching.
In Nigeria, the PDGE programme is designed for bachelor’s degree and HND graduates who want to become full fledge teachers. While you may naturally have a passion and talent to teach, in the civil service and some private institution, there is a limit to how far you can be promoted.
PDGE curriculum involves different core education courses like sociology, psychology, and philosophy of education. There are also courses that give hands on practical teaching experience i.e micro teaching and teaching practice. Before PGDE candidate becomes a qualified teacher, there is a module where the student teacher is attached to a school on teaching practice. He/She would be assessed while on this field experience.
To fully complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDD) programme, student must write a project/thesis. It usually has a higher course unit load.
With a PGDE certifcate, you can proceed for a MED Masters degree in education. Many Nigerian universities offer a PGDE. This can be on full and part time basis.
At the National Teachers Institute, PGDE is a popular course at her numerous satellite campuses across Nigeria. A PGDE in collaboration with National Open UniversityPGDE in collaboration with National Open University is also available. Depending on the institution PGDE has a duration of between 9 months and 18 months.
